Information Technology or “IT” as it is often called covers a wide range of career opportunities in the technology space.

Popular Careers in Information Technology

Popular careers in information technology are technical support, computer programming, web developers, computer systems analysts, IT Security and, network engineers.

Technical Support

Technical support jobs vary widely.  Technical support workers can have titles such as help desk technicians, operations analysts, and problem managers or solvers.  Mainly technical support workers provide professional troubleshooting advice for users for both hardware and software. Communication abilities, problem-solving skills, and well-rounded tech knowledge are assets for technical support positions.

Computer Programmers

Computer programmers write and test code for software programs.  Computer programmers often work closely with web and software developers to write code for digital applications and computer programs. Skills that can help you succeed in a computer programming career are attention to detail, logical intelligence, and the ability to be a team player.

Web Developers

Web developers build websites and the backend of digital platforms and e-commerce sites.  Being a successful web developer requires blending creativity and artistry with technical dexterity.  Web developer careers include web producers, multimedia architects, and internet engineers. 

Computer Systems Analysts

Computer systems analysts understand computer hardware, software, and networks and how they interact and work together.  Computer systems analysts have the skills to analyze information quickly and effectively. To become a computer systems analyst a degree in a computer or information science field is usually required, although it’s not always a requirement. Some companies will hire computer systems analysts who have non-computer-related education but possess the necessary skills in information technology or computer programming.

IT Security

IT security is a growing area of the technology sector.  IT security specialists keep their organizations safe from malicious digital hackers. These jobs require the implementation and operating of security software, performing scans for abnormalities, upgrading systems, and providing updates on the risks involved in daily activities. This job requires problem-solving skills, crisis management, and communication skills. 

Network Engineers

Network engineers set up, administer, maintain and upgrade local and wide area networks.  Depending on the job itself, network engineers can also be responsible for security, data, storage, and disaster recovery.  Most network engineers have computer science degrees.  This education prepares them for the required planning, analysis, and problem-solving skills needed to excel in this career path.
